Databases for Education
Throughout your studies, you’ll need to access journal articles for your assignments, but how do you find them?
-
The USQ Library subscribes to a comprehensive range of databases which index scholarly journals, providing access to abstracts of articles, and in most cases, to the
full text of the articles online.
Access all Databases allows you select a database by name, or by subject. If you haven’t already, viewing the
database section in either the
Information for Success or the
Learning Journey tutorial will help you become more familiar with databases.
Databases have their advantages, but what about the Internet? What about Google?
-
Google Scholar is a very effective searching tool to locate references to refereed and scholarly articles.
However, whenever you attempt to view the full text of an article through such a commercial site, you are likely to encounter a request to
“pay” for access. It’s important to remember in such cases, to take the full reference of the article, return to the
Library catalogue and search to see if the journal is held by the library, making full use of the USQ Library’s journal subscriptions.
The
Effective Internet Searching tutorial also offers further advice on locating and evaluating quality resources.
